"The Weekly Dish" March 29, 2013

Aloha!

Thanks for stopping by The Weekly Dish and digging in! We're proud to serve a delightful recipe for Maui's community and entertainment news each and every week on KAOI 1110Am/96.7Fm .

Much love to our special guests today, including producer JessicaKapoor from ArT=Mixx, which is holding their big Forest event this Saturday, March 30, from 7 to 11 p.m. outdoors at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. This 21-and-over event is FREE all night. I love these art extravaganzas! You're literally transported into another dimension, and all of your senses are heightened by the sights, sounds, audio, vibrations, and even smells, of Maui's innovative artists. Check it out! (For more details, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/427953710617859/?ref=ts&fref=ts and http://colorbox.me/artmixx/?v=3.)

We had a few technical difficulties getting Jessica on the air, but were able to cruise through it and give ArT=Mixx lots of love. Congrats to Jessica, Trevor, Cudra, Bennett and the head art brains that built this spectacle of awesomeness. I'm excited!  ;-)

Yoga instructor Megan Nolan filled us in on all the celebratory events going on at Body Alive Yoga and Movement Studio (BAYMS) and Exotic Eye Tattoo (EET) from April 1 through 5. Congrats to Rachel G and her 'ohana on two years at BAYMS and a successful freshman year at EET. Such a cool small businesses... We love 'em!  (Check out the flier below and visit

Paul Janes-Brown gave us the scoop on the arts and theatre scene during his "Let's Talk More... " segment. Paul and I both were both sick recently, and our raspy voices and sad sniffles are sewn throughout the episode... Sorry! Haha

Here below are some of the Maui Weekly articles we featured today. Good news galore!

During the music appreciation portion of the show, we chatted about the Battle of the Bands down at Mulligan's. Our friends from K-Rock are holding a kickass finals tonight in Wailea, and The Satterday Saints, The Kittinger Jump and The Whiskey Pimps are ready to face-off
in front of industry folks, media, fans, friends and foes.  Oooh, I love me a good rock battle! There's a stellar grand prize package too, which I believe includes some recording time, advertising, design kokua and more. Good luck to all of the bands!

We played a tender track from Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real called "All the Pretty Horses."  Song gets me every time...

Lukas is at Charley's in Pa'ia again this weekend, and you don't want to miss it! I went last Saturday, and left with a grin for days. Nothing like some good old rock'n'roll. Visit http://charleysmaui.com/show.cfm?id=96429 to buy tickets now! Also, check out the fliers below and visit www.charleysmaui.com to discover all the cool dates Jonathan & co. are presenting on the North Shore.

Also, keep up with Lukas here on The Weekly Dish as over the next few weeks as we present a series of interviews with the sweet and ambitious rock star. Visit www.promiseofthereal.com to follow his band. They are one of the best in the nation right now.

My Groovy co-host Shawn and I shared about our Kihei Kalama Village friends from Ambrosia Martini Lounge and Three''s Bar & Grill, and talked story about the gay rights legislation that's currently firing up the Supreme Court and the online world. We can't wait til our government wakes up and does the right thing. Giving equal rights to same-sex couples shouldn't even be up for debate nowadays.

Stella Blues welcomes the fantastic John Cruz tomorrow, and The Throwdowns tonight for a special Supper Club presentation. Looking forward to seeing Erin Smith and the boys in a more intimate setting. Sorry Ola, no scissor kicks. Also, our buddy Kimo Nevius is starting
to do Happy Hour music at Stella's on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Visit www.stellablues.com.

Our gifted buddy Derick Sebastian joined us in the studio, and we had a great time learning more about this 'ukulele wonder's recent journeys and his adorable family. Derick is a humble, happy and talented man, I tell ya. Good friend to me too. I appreciate him on many levels. If you don't know him, get to know him. STAT! Visit www.dericksebastian.com.

We were stoked to have his presence grace KAOI and his string skills. He played "Good Morning" for us, a song he wrote one morning when he woke up to see his wife and keiki sleeping. One of my favorite originals by Derick of his album, "From His Heart."  :o)
